Yoga, Reiki and Gong Bath

The Yoga Experience

Perfectly run yoga classes deserve the very best surroundings. Once part of the famous Swythamley Hall estate, the Chapel is now a private residence and yoga centre, flooded with natural light and surrounded by acres of protected park land. With beautiful stained glass and leaded light windows, stone columns and soaring vaulted beams, the Chapel has to be one of the most inspiring yoga venues in the UK.

Run by Julie Fairclough, all classes will be held in what was the nave, and are suitable for beginners to advanced. She will be joined by Joanne Griffiths for Reiki sessions, and Dr John Shapter for ultra-relaxing gong baths.

Yoga mats and pads plus cosy blankets and lavender eye pads will be provided.

Yin Yoga

A way to slow down in long held stretches. The postures are held for between 3-10 minutes. Most of the postures are done on the floor. Each posture is like a mini meditation focusing on body and breath. Yin usually targets the back and hips so great for anyone who want to undo tension. The long held stretches target connective tissues including fascia, bones and joints, increases circulation, and improves the flow of energy and balances out our fast-paced lives.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation also known as yogic sleep or effortless relaxation. It is usually practiced lying down with a teacher guiding the session. The practice draws our attention inwards and our body finds its natural state of equilibrium. The benefit of practising Yoga Nidra is it can help with sleep, improve powers of concentration, and build self-esteem and confidence.

Hatha Yoga

A mixture of seated, standing, balance postures. A class will aim to strengthen and build mobility in the muscles and joints, while gradually increasing flexibility. Each class focuses on breath and body awareness. Benefits – this yoga can relieve back ache, relieve tension, increase flexibility, strength and mobility in the whole body.

The Reiki Experience

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique. The predominate form of reiki practiced throughout the world today, also known as Usui reiki, was created by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. It’s a complementary or alternative health approach. Reiki does not directly cure diseases or illnesses. Instead, it’s used as a way to manage symptoms and improve general well-being. During a reiki session, the practitioner places their hands either directly on you or just above you to bring about healing. The belief is that the practitioner is able to stimulate your body’s natural healing abilities.

Benefits of Reiki: relieves anxiety and fatigue, treats depression, and enhances quality of life. Reiki may also be used to treat headaches, insomnia and nausea.

The Gong Bath Experience

A gong bath is an ancient type of sound therapy that’s been practiced for thousands of years. The term ‘bath’ signifies being bathed in sound waves – there’s no water involved. Fully clothed, you lay comfortably on a yoga mat for 60 minutes. The thing that makes it so special is that it’s a totally immersive mind and body experience. Sound doesn’t just enter through your ears – the vibrations go through your whole body whether your ears are consciously listening to it or not – massaging and stimulating you inside and out. Because you’re focusing on the sound (it’s pretty impossible not to), it declutters the mind, clears emotional blockages and apparently helps to heal physical aches and pains.
